Shedding Light on a Sticky Situation

Shedding Light on a Sticky Situation

by Elle Reisner.

Menstruation is a completely natural and normal biological process that nearly every woman experiences.  So why is it surrounded in stigma and silence?  Why are conversations about menstruation not as common as they should be?

For starters, from a young age girls are taught to hide their periods, especially from men. This causes many young girls to feel shameful of something that is not only natural, but beyond their control.  This can cause self-esteem issues, and prevent a girl from fully embracing growing up.In addition to this, the media either completely avoids the topic of menstruation or portrays it using euphemisms, or delicate metaphors.  Why are we tip-toeing around something that is completely normal?  Should we not instead be celebrating this?  This is the impactful event that turns a girl into a woman, and allows her to create life!  Why do we place shame and stigma on such an event? Another thing contributing to the stigma surrounding menstruation is accessibility.  In many countries a heavy tax is placed on menstruation products, making it inaccessible to many people. For example, in Kenya, there is a 16% tax on pads, making them a financial burden. This discourages the use of pads while simultaneously reinforcing the idea that menstruation is shameful and something to hide.Pads are a necessity, not a luxury.

They are necessary for a woman to
manage her menstrual hygiene. They are comfortable while also absorbing menstrual flow, and preventing infections.  However, in many developing countries and even some developed countries, pads are considered a luxury, not a necessity.  As a result women are forced to use unsanitary alternatives such as rags, leaves, or even mud. This is extremely unsafe and can lead to infections that put their health at risk.We must prevent this by creating safe and healthy environments to discuss menstruation. We also must advocate for lower taxes on menstrual hygiene and ensure that women and girls can access the products and knowledge they need to manage their menstrual health.

A Trip To One Of The 7 Wonders of WORLD

A Trip To One Of The 7 Wonders of WORLD

Hello everyone! My name is Carlotta, I am a 22-year-old Italian student, recently graduated from the University of Padua. Following my graduation, I decided to apply as project coordinator at the non-profit organization HEEALS, in India. I would like to share with you one of the wonderful experiences I was able to have, during my internship.

A trip entirely organized thanks to HEEALS, with an experienced guide, meals included, and a private taxi driver, made it possible to realize my dream of seeing the beauties of Agra City in one single day.

My journey began at 2 a.m., when the taxi driver picked me up directly from my accommodation and drove me to New Delhi, where I met the second driver and those who would be my traveling companions.

From here, my overnight journey officially began. After meeting and exchanging some small talk with my traveling companions, I was finally able to relax and admire the scenery outside the window with the dark and half-empty roads of the night. It is fascinating to think how the same roads, which are crowded with cars, motorcycles and tuk-tuks during the day, can empty out completely at night and make way for an almost unreal silence.

The trip took 3 hours in all, and I woke up at the crack of dawn. After a few minutes, the car stopped and a guide joined us. We had finally arrived in Agra! The first place we visited was, of course, the Taj Mahal!

We left our backpacks in the car and immediately headed for our first destination.

Sunrise is the best time of day to see and photograph it. The sunlight reflects off the white marble from which its octagonal walls are made, and makes it bright and radiant.

The guide gave us some time to take some pictures with our cameras and after that he began his explanation.

The first thing we were able to admire was the Guest House (or Darwaza), that is completely built of red sandstone in contrast to the main building in the center, the mausoleum, and that is perfectly simmetrical and of the same appearence and proportions of the Mosque, which is located to the east of the Taj Mahal. The gateaway of the Guest House is positioned so that the arched door forms an artistic frame for the Taj Mahal.

In contrast to these two structures, the Taj Mahal is built entirely of white marble and meticulously decorated. It is a perfect symmetrical planned building.
What impressed me the most were the detailed floreal patterns carved in the marble and the elegant arabic calligraphy at the tomb entrance.

Entering to the mausoleum, we could admire the tomb of the empress consort Mumtaz Mahal, located exactly in the middle of the octagonal structure, and on the left side, constructed 30 years after, the tomb of the emperor Shah Jahan. It was surprising to know that these ones were only illusory, in fact the real sarcophagi of the two emperors were situated in the crypt, in the lower part of the chamber. Unfortunately, tourists were not allowed to take pictures here.
At the end of our guided tour, we went to the roof terrace of the Taj Mahal and, after walking into a small dome, we had an amazing view of the Yamuna river and of the Mughal garden. The beauty of such a landscape left me speechless.

We had some time to rest and to take some other pictures before the ending of our journey.
Before leaving, we had also the opportunity to buy some little gifts for our loved ones at the very recommended shop “The Silver Hut”, where I bought two tiny and colored elephants that could remind me the colours of this city. I only wish I will have the opportunity to visit it again, in future!
For the moment, it has been a unique experience that I will never forget.
Thank You HEEALS!

Why Ayush in post covid cold and fever?

Aayush system include Ayurveda, yoga and naturopathy, Unani, siddha and Homeopathy. These system of medicines are traditional and very much accepted in the society. There are many reasons for the widespread acceptance of traditional system with respect to conventional system of medicine.

The main source of drugs in these traditional systems are plant, animal products and minerals. This gives an easy and reliable access to the people as most frequent illness could easly be cured from home itself. The reliability of source of medicine is an important factor that push people towards Ayush system while compared to allopathic medicines. As in allopathic drugs the medicines are mostly synthetic chemicals, that too costlier compared to other medicine make the people to approach these systems of medicine.

The medications provided by allopathic system concerns public due to its side effects. This has created a dilemma to choose these medicines for treatment. As there are more plant based preparation in tradition system public is confident enough to take Ayush medicines.

Coming to the action of drugs the conventional system of medicine usually prefer pathogen specific treatment. For bacterial disease they provide antibiotic, for fungal disease they are using antifungals and when it comes to disease of viral origin they use anti viral drugs. Those are very much specific to each pathogen, when the pathogen is unknown the treatment protocol push them to use an antibacterial or an anti protozoal drug for even a viral disease.

Recently during pandemic newly evolved Covid 19 virus made the researchers to try an anti protozoal drug hydroxychloroquinine for treating symptoms. Later studies prove that drugs did not do much benefit.

But when it comes to Ayush system the treatment is always symptoms specific. This approach is what it makes traditional system eternal. There is no delay in setting any treatment protocolt for new diseases since symptom always be present. Adding to this the earliest papers of cure of covered patients published was based on TCM that is traditional Chinese medicine. It holds a proof that these systems workout brilliantly irrespective of type of pathogen.

Coming to Ayush medication for postcovid fever and cold there are available options at cheap cost in and around us.optimum intake of these medicine can heels soon without much side effects. therefore it would be better to choose Ayush medication for treatment of acute disease.

WORLD HEALTH DAY 2022

Are we able to reimagine a world where clean air, water and food are available to all?Where economies are focused on health and well-being?Where cities are liveable and people have control over their health and the health of the planet?

In the midst of a pandemic, a polluted planet, increasing diseases like cancer, asthma, heart disease, on World Health Day 2022, WHO will focus global attention on urgent actions needed to keep humans and the planet healthy and foster a movement to create societies focused on well-being. WHO estimates that more than 13 million deaths around the world each year are due to avoidable environmental causes. This includes the climate crisis which is the single biggest health threat facing humanity. The climate crisis is also a health crisis.

Our political, social and commercial decisions are driving the climate and health crisis. Over 90% of people breathe unhealthy air resulting from burning of fossil fuels. A heating world is seeing mosquitos spread diseases farther and faster than ever before. Extreme weather events, land degradation and water scarcity are displacing people and affecting their health. Pollution and plastics are found at the bottom of our deepest oceans, the highest mountains, and have made their way into our food chain. Systems that produce highly processed, unhealthy foods and beverages are driving a wave of obesity, increasing cancer and heart disease while generating a third of global greenhouse gas emissions.
While the COVID-19 pandemic showed us the healing power of science, it also highlighted the inequities in our world. The pandemic has revealed weaknesses in all areas of society and underlined the urgency of creating sustainable well-being societies committed to achieving equitable health now and for future generations without breaching ecological limits. The present design of the economy leads to inequitable distribution of income, wealth and power, with too many people still living in poverty and instability. A well-being economy has human well-being, equity and ecological sustainability as its goals. These goals are translated into long-term investments, well-being budgets, social protection and legal and fiscal strategies. Breaking these cycles of destruction for the planet and human health requires legislative action, corporate reform and individuals to be supported and incentivized to make healthy choices.
April 7 is celebrated and observed as World Health Day. The day is celebrated annually in accordance with the World Health Organization’s aim to discuss health-related issues and to draw attention to specific health issues concerning people across the world. The first World Health Day was celebrated and observed in 1950, after 7 April was set aside as a designated date to celebrate the creation of the World Health Organization in 1948 in the First Health Assembly. The day thereby marks the anniversary of WHO after it was established in 1948.

World Health Day Theme 2022
The theme for this year’s World Health Day is “Our Planet, Our Health". Amid the ongoing pandemic and pollution growing on the planet, diseases like cancer, asthma, and heart diseases are increasing rapidly. World Health Organization aims to focus global attention on the urgent actions needed to “keep humans and the planet healthy."

World Health Day History

World Health Day was one of the first official acts of the World Health Organization, which came into force on 7th April 1948. The first World Health Day was celebrated on 22 July in 1949 and the date was later changed to 7 April, in order to encourage student participation.

In order to understand the history of World Health Day, it is important to look at the creation of the World Health Organization, which took place in 1945 at the United Nations Conference. A motion was passed to create a new and independent organization that is solely dedicated to discussing health topics. As many as 61 countries signed the agreement for the inception of the World Health Organization on April 7 in 1948.

World Health Day Significance

World Health Day is celebrated every year to raise awareness about the ongoing health issues that concern people across the world. The day is also used as an opportunity to spread awareness about the overall health and well-being of people.

National Safe Motherhood Day.

National Safe Motherhood Day is celebrated on April 11 each year. In 2003, the Government of India declared April 11, the birth anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi as National Safe Motherhood Day. The declaration is an initiative of White Ribbon Alliance India (WRAI), an alliance of 1800 organizations.

This day is observed annually to create awareness of adequate access to care during pregnancy, childbirth, and postnatal services. Share these quotes to spread awareness about motherhood.
Women have a god gift to give birth to a child. In itself it is a miracle. In our country there are women who died while giving birth and also don't get nutrition, proper care during the course of pregnancy and after that also. National Safe Motherhood Day (NSMD) is celebrated to aware people about healthcare facilities for women. Let us study further about NSMD.
National Safe Motherhood Day (NSMD) is observed annually on 11 April to raise awareness about the proper healthcare of women and maternity facilities to pregnant and lactating women. This day also focus on reducing anaemia among women, institutional delivery, for better pre and post natal health care etc. which are necessary for mothers.

World Health Day. 7th April 2021.

Building a fairer, healthier world for everyone

In recent years, countries in the Western Pacific have experienced rapid economic growth, migration and urbanization. This created opportunities for better lives for many, but left others behind. The COVID-19 pandemic has undercut recent health gains, pushed more people into poverty and food insecurity, and amplified gender, social and health inequities.
This World Health Day, we’re calling for action to eliminate health inequities, as part of a year-long global campaign to bring people together to build a fairer, healthier world. The campaign highlights WHO’s constitutional principle that “the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health is one of the fundamental rights of every human being without distinction of race, religion, political belief, economic or social condition.”

The world is still an unequal one. The places where we live, work and play may make it harder for some to reach their full health potential, while others thrive. Health inequities are not only unjust and unfair, but they also threaten the advances made to date, and have the potential to widen rather than narrow equity gaps.
However, health inequities are preventable with strategies that place greater attention to improving health equity, especially for the most vulnerable and marginalized groups. COVID-19 has hit all countries hard, but its impact has been harshest on those communities which were already vulnerable, who are more exposed to the disease, less likely to have access to quality health care services and more likely to experience adverse consequences as a result of measures implemented to contain the pandemic.
That’s why we are calling on leaders to ensure that communities are at the forefront in decision-making processes as we move forward to a new future, and that everyone has living and working conditions that are conducive to good health. At the same time, we urge leaders to monitor health inequities, and to ensure that all people are able to access quality health services depending on their needs and values within their communities.
Facts and Figures:
• For the first time in 20 years, global poverty levels are predicted to rise and hinder the progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals1
• Up to 60% of people living in some countries of the Region lack coverage with essential health services.
• More than 1 billion people living in informal settlements or slums are facing increased challenges in preventing infection and transmission of the coronavirus.
• The Asia-Pacific region as a whole account for nearly 82.5 million or 32% of the world’s international migrants.
• 5.9 million children in the Asia-Pacific Region are at risk of not returning back to school due to the disruption to education and the economic impact of the pandemic.
• 52% of the Asia-Pacific population remains unconnected to the internet.
"It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver: - Mahatma Gandhi
"Healthy citizens are the greatest asset any country can have". Winston Churchill
