Water for peace

Water can create peace or spark conflict.

When water is scarce or polluted, or when people have unequal, or no access, tensions can rise between communities and countries.

More than 3 billion people worldwide depend on water that crosses national borders. Yet, only 24 countries have cooperation agreements for all their shared water.

As climate change impacts increase, and populations grow, there is an urgent need, within and between countries, to unite around protecting and conserving our most precious resource.

Public health and prosperity, food and energy systems, economic productivity and environmental integrity all rely on a well-functioning and equitably managed water cycle.
Creating a positive ripple effect

The theme of World Water Day 2024 is ‘Water for Peace’.

When we cooperate on water, we create a positive ripple effect – fostering harmony, generating prosperity and building resilience to shared challenges.

We must act upon the realization that water is not only a resource to be used and competed over – it is a human right, intrinsic to every aspect of life.

This World Water Day, we all need to unite around water and use water for peace, laying the foundations of a more stable and prosperous tomorrow.
Did you know?

• 2.2 billion still live without safely managed drinking water, including 115 million people who drink surface water. (WHO/UNICEF, 2023)

• Roughly half of the world’s population is experiencing severe water scarcity for at least part of the year (IPCC, 2022). 

• Water-related disasters have dominated the list of disasters over the -past 50 years and account for 70 per cent of all deaths related to natural disasters (World Bank, 2022). 

• Transboundary waters account for 60 per cent of the world’s freshwater flows, and 153 countries have territory within at least 1 of the 310 transboundary river and lake basins and inventoried 468 transboundary aquifer systems (UN-Water, 2023).

• Only 24 countries report that all their transboundary basins are covered by cooperation arrangements. (UN-Water, 2021).

World Water Day -2023!

 

World Water Day is about accelerating change to solve the water and sanitation crisis. Dysfunction throughout the water cycle undermines progress on all major global issues, from health to hunger, gender equality to jobs, education to industry, and disasters to peace. In 2015, the world committed to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6
 as part of the 2030 Agenda – the promise that everyone would have safely managed water and sanitation by 2030. Right now, we are seriously off-track. Billions of people and countless schools, businesses, healthcare centers, farms, and factories are being held back because their human rights to water and sanitation still need to be fulfilled. There is an urgent need to accelerate change – to go beyond ‘business as usual.’ The latest data show that governments must work on average four times faster to meet SDG 6 on time, but this is not a situation that any single actor or group can solve.

Water affects everyone, so we need everyone to take action.

Did you know?

1.4 million people die annually and 74 million will have their lives shortened by diseases related to poor water, sanitation and hygiene. (WHO 2022)

Today, 1 in 4 people – 2 billion people worldwide – lack safe drinking water. (WHO/UNICEF 2021)

Almost half of the global population – 3.6 billion people – lack safe sanitation. (WHO/UNICEF 2021)

Globally, 44 per cent of household wastewater is not safely treated. (UN-Water 2021)

Global water demand (in water withdrawals) is projected to increase by 55 per cent by 2050. (OECD 2012)

WORLD WATER DAY 2022 GROUNDWATER - MAKING THE INVISIBLE VISIBLE

Today we celebrate the World Water Day, an observance day established by the UN in 1992. 

In India, less than 50% of the population has access to safe and drinkable water. The causes of water contamination can be attributed to the presence of substances such as fluoride and arsenic, elements present in 1.96 million homes. Also, two thirds of India suffers from severe water exhaustion.

The Convention on the Rights of a Child is a document approved by the UN in 1989 that states that every child has the right to have safe water. Even UNICEF is working in this direction with the WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) program, to ensure every child this basic, but not taken for granted, right.

Safe water is a basic right for everyone, especially for girls and women that reside in disadvantaged communities. The lack of clean water in villages, slums areas and unauthorized communities is a problem that should be urgently addressed. 

Even today, not having reliable water is a problem that most afflicts women and child, because they are the ones who have to get water for the entire family. 

About 54% of Indian women and girls that live in marginalized areas take about 35 minutes of their time everyday just to get water. So, they lose up to 27 days of their year only for this activity. 

Without a proper sanitation and hygiene facilities where they need, it becomes more and more complicated for women to simply access water. 

A fair access to safe water should no longer be a problem, for anyone in the world.

Groundwater is invisible, but its impact is visible everywhere. Out of sight, under our feet, groundwater is a hidden treasure that enriches our lives.

Almost all of the liquid freshwater in the world is groundwater. As climate change gets worse, groundwater will become more and more critical.

We need to work together to sustainably manage this precious resource. Groundwater may be out of sight, but it must not be out of mind.
