Oral Hygiene Is An Important As Handwash Hygiene. Take Care Of Your Teeth and Gums.

Oral Hygiene Is An Important As Handwash Hygiene. Take Care Of Your Teeth and Gums.

Maintaining good oral hygiene is one of the most important things you can do for your teeth and gums. Healthy teeth not only enable you to look and feel good, they make it possible to eat and speak properly. Good oral health is important to your overall well-being.

Daily preventive care, including proper brushing and flossing, will help stop problems before they develop and is much less painful, expensive, and worrisome than treating conditions that have been allowed to progress.
Some Ways to Keep Your Teeth Healthy.
• Don’t go to bed without brushing your teeth.
• Brush properly. The way you brush is equally important — in fact, doing a poor job of brushing your teeth is almost as bad as not brushing at all. Take your time, moving the toothbrush in gentle, circular motions to remove plaque. Unremoved plaque can harden, leading to calculus buildup and gingivitis (early gum disease).
• Don’t neglect your tongue
Plaque can also build up on your tongue. Not only can this lead to bad mouth odor, but it can lead to other oral health problems. Gently brush your tongue every time you brush your teeth.
• Use a fluoride toothpaste
When it comes to toothpaste, there are more important elements to look for than whitening power and flavors. No matter which version you choose, make sure it contains fluoride. While fluoride has come under scrutiny by those worried about how it impacts other areas of health, this substance remains a mainstay in oral health. This is because fluoride is a leading defense against tooth decay. It works by fighting germs that can lead to decay, as well as providing a protective barrier for your teeth.
Treat flossing as important as brushing. Many who brush regularly neglect to floss. Flossing is not just for getting those little pieces of Chinese food or broccoli that may be getting stuck in between your teeth.
• Consider mouthwash
Advertisements make mouthwash seem necessary for good oral health, but many people skip them because they don’t know how they work. Mouthwash helps in three ways: It reduces the amount of acid in the mouth, cleans hard-to-brush areas in and around the gums, and re-mineralizes the teeth. In children and older people, where the ability to brush and floss may not be ideal, a mouthwash is particularly helpful.
Ask your dentist for specific mouthwash recommendations. Certain brands are best for children, and those with sensitive teeth
• Drink more water.
• Eat crunchy fruits and vegetables
• Limit sugary and acidic foods

World Ozone Day- "Ozone For Life"

 World Ozone Day

"Ozone For Life"
35 Years Of Ozone Layer Protection
16th September 2020.

This year's theme for the World Ozone Day 2020 is "Ozone for life: 35 years of ozone layer protection".

In 1985, the governments at the global level adopted the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer. Two years later in 1987, the Montreal Protocol was drafted where the governments, scientists and industry worked together to cut out 99 per cent of all ozone-depleting substances.

According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the ozone layer is recovering and expected to return to pre-1980 values by mid-century all thanks to the Montreal Protocol. Meanwhile, supporting the Montreal Protocol, the Kigali Amendment, which came into force in 2019, will work towards reducing hydrofluorocarbon (HFCs) and greenhouse gases that have climate-warming potential and are damaging to the environment.

Importance of ozone layer

The ultraviolet radiation or UV rays emitted by the sun have the potential to cause skin cancer and cataract. These harmful rays also cause significant damage not only to humans but also to plant and marine life. Hence, the ozone layer acts as a protective shield against all such harmful radiations from the sun.

Ways to protect ozone layer
One of the important ways to protect ozone layer is to avoid using harmful gases like CFCs chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), halogenated hydrocarbon, methyl bromide and nitrous oxide in various processes.

The second option is to minimise the use of personal vehicles like cars that releases carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides and resort to public transport thereby saving financial resources and the environment.
Another way to save the ozone layer is to properly maintain your air conditioners. If ACs are not properly maintained, there are high chances that CFC gas is released into the atmosphere.
People should also avoid using cosmetics, hair sprays, room fresheners as these products release Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).

Several greenhouse gases are produced during the manufacturing of chemical fertilisers. Hence, we should avoid the use of fertilisers in agriculture and replace them with organic ones.

The ozone layer, a fragile shield of gas, protects the Earth from the harmful portion of the rays of the sun, thus helping preserve life on the planet.

The phaseout of controlled uses of ozone depleting substances and the related reductions have not only helped protect the ozone layer for this and future generations, but have also contributed significantly to global efforts to address climate change; furthermore, it has protected human health and ecosystems by limiting the harmful ultraviolet radiation from reaching the Earth.
This year, we celebrate 35 years of the Vienna Convention and 35 years of global ozone layer protection. Life on Earth would not be possible without sunlight. But the energy emanating from the sun would be too much for life on Earth to thrive were it not for the ozone layer. This stratospheric layer shields Earth from most of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation. Sunlight makes life possible, but the ozone layer makes life as we know it possible.World Ozone Day, held on September 16, celebrates this achievement. It shows that collective decisions and action, guided by science, are the only way to solve major global crises. In this year of the COVID-19 pandemic that has brought such social and economic hardship, the ozone treaties’ message of working together in harmony and for the collective good is more important than ever. The slogan of the day, ‘Ozone for life’, reminds us that not only is ozone crucial for life on Earth, but that we must continue to protect the ozone layer for future generations.

Implementation of the Montreal Protocol

Implementation of the Montreal Protocol progressed well in developed and developing countries. All phase-out schedules were adhered to in most cases, some even ahead of schedule. Attention focused initially on chemicals with higher ozone-depletion potentials including CFCs and halons. The phase-out schedule for HCFCs was more relaxed due to their lower ozone-depletion potentials and because they have also been used as transitional substitutes for CFCs.

The HCFC phase-out schedule was introduced in 1992 for developed and developing countries, the latter with a freeze in 2015, and final phase-out by 2030 in developed countries and 2040 in developing countries. In 2007, Parties to the Montreal Protocol decided to accelerate the HCFC phase-out schedule for both developed and developing countries.

Universal ratification

On 16th September 2009, the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol became the first treaties in the history of the United Nations to achieve universal ratification.

Kiga Amendment

The Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer reached agreement at their 28th Meeting of the Parties on 15 October 2016 in Kigali, Rwanda to phase-down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).

IMPORTANCE OF VOLUNTEERING

Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.” - Elizabeth Andrew

Volunteering is one of the most effective ways to gain meaningful, hands-on experience in the social work field.Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, “What are you doing for others?” Last month, I started working as an online volunteer for HEEALS.I have realized that it has enormous benefits. Volunteering helps bring a difference as it feels good to help other people and enact changeand give back to the community. Volunteering helps us make friends, learn new skills, advance our career, and even feel happier and healthier. The unselfish effort to bring cheer to others is the beginning of a happier life for ourselves.

Benefits of volunteering:
·         Volunteering connects you to others and helps to gain new insights.
·         Volunteering is good for your mind and body
·         Volunteering can advance your career
·         Volunteering brings a sense of accomplishment to your life

There are wonderfulVolunteering opportunities available at HEEALShttp://heeals.org/volunteer-zone-

Internship:
Experience as an intern is an incredible way to discover India and to work for an NGO. As an intern you will be treated as an employee so it could be the way for you to have a job experience abroad and to practice the skills you’ve learnt in your studies.

Online Volunteering:
As an online volunteer with us, you could do a variety of things in the comfort of your home or office.

Volunteers:
HEEALS is a growing organization which offers volunteers the unique ability & mechanism to have a truly significant role in organizational and program development.
During a volunteer program, you become deeply involved with local community, immersed in a new culture and a different way of life.

Gap Year:
During your Gap year volunteering with HEEALS allows you to do something a bit more constructive with your time. This will hone your skills, help you learn a language, immerse in another culture, build long lasting bonds, and provide vital services to a local community. Your gap year is a chance, where you can utilize your existing skills in excellent practice.

I would like to end this with the words of Mahatma Gandhi - “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

How HEEALS implements its WASH projects with origami, the art of paper folding

How HEEALS implements its WASH projects with origami, the art of paper folding

Since its foundation in 2010 HEEALS has a mandate of empowering local and rural communities to become sustainable in Health, Education, Environment and Livelihood Society sectors through engaging workshops, resources distribution and content creation. In a constant effort to improve its projects and find the best solutions to better involve its beneficiaries, HEEALS has recently implemented its WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) projects with sessions of origami making.

What is origami?
“Origami is the art of making objects for decoration by folding sheets of paper into shapes” (Cambridge Dictionary). The
goal is to transform a flat square sheet of paper into a sculpture through folding techniques, discouraging the use of cuts and glue.

Why origami?
We think that active participation of our beneficiaries is essential for a successful project. Usually HEEALS works with young boys and girls of several Indian schools and marginalized communities, and that’s the main reason that pushes us to create interactive workshop sessions that can be fun beyond instructive.

WASH origami
Our idea is to dedicate some time, at the end of our WASH workshops, to teach kids how to fold simple origami shapes. Doing so they will implement their skills, have fun, remember what is WASH about and connect what they have been taught during the workshop with a practical activity.
WASH is about three things: Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. Each of these parts can be easily represented by simple origami shapes.
• Water, what we explain during our workshops is that having safe water is essential to human life and health. Safe or drinking water is water that “does not represent any significant risk to health over a lifetime of consumption, including different sensitivities that may occur between life stages” (WHO, 2017). Safe water can be daily
used for cooking, bathing, cleaning and much more. We decided to represent Water with a fish origami that is per excellence the inhabitant of clear and neat waters.
• Sanitation, this term describes the strategies used to provide adequate water for drinking and other needs and it refers to the provision of facilities and services in order to accomplish this goal. Providing water filters, collectors or tanks to schools and marginalized communities is a priority for
HEEALS. A water bomb
origami can best represent and simplify this idea. It is fun for kids and it could be a nice option and a more environmental friendly solution to the huge number of plastic balloons filled with colors and used during the Holi festival. In fact this simple origami shape can be blown with air, filled with water or with colored powders and kids can used them as a very easy-to-make toy.
• Hygiene “refers to conditions and practices that help to maintain health and prevent the spread of diseases” (WHO).
Personal hygiene refers to maintaining the body's cleanliness. During our workshops we always remind kids that personal cleanliness can be preserved by practicing simple daily activities to maintain clean and neat our body, the place where we live and the environment around us. This idea can be represented and simplified by an origami broom, a very common and simple object used daily in every house.
