A Trip To One Of The 7 Wonders of WORLD

A Trip To One Of The 7 Wonders of WORLD

Hello everyone! My name is Carlotta, I am a 22-year-old Italian student, recently graduated from the University of Padua. Following my graduation, I decided to apply as project coordinator at the non-profit organization HEEALS, in India. I would like to share with you one of the wonderful experiences I was able to have, during my internship.

A trip entirely organized thanks to HEEALS, with an experienced guide, meals included, and a private taxi driver, made it possible to realize my dream of seeing the beauties of Agra City in one single day.

My journey began at 2 a.m., when the taxi driver picked me up directly from my accommodation and drove me to New Delhi, where I met the second driver and those who would be my traveling companions.

From here, my overnight journey officially began. After meeting and exchanging some small talk with my traveling companions, I was finally able to relax and admire the scenery outside the window with the dark and half-empty roads of the night. It is fascinating to think how the same roads, which are crowded with cars, motorcycles and tuk-tuks during the day, can empty out completely at night and make way for an almost unreal silence.

The trip took 3 hours in all, and I woke up at the crack of dawn. After a few minutes, the car stopped and a guide joined us. We had finally arrived in Agra! The first place we visited was, of course, the Taj Mahal!

We left our backpacks in the car and immediately headed for our first destination.

Sunrise is the best time of day to see and photograph it. The sunlight reflects off the white marble from which its octagonal walls are made, and makes it bright and radiant.

The guide gave us some time to take some pictures with our cameras and after that he began his explanation.

The first thing we were able to admire was the Guest House (or Darwaza), that is completely built of red sandstone in contrast to the main building in the center, the mausoleum, and that is perfectly simmetrical and of the same appearence and proportions of the Mosque, which is located to the east of the Taj Mahal. The gateaway of the Guest House is positioned so that the arched door forms an artistic frame for the Taj Mahal.

In contrast to these two structures, the Taj Mahal is built entirely of white marble and meticulously decorated. It is a perfect symmetrical planned building.
What impressed me the most were the detailed floreal patterns carved in the marble and the elegant arabic calligraphy at the tomb entrance.

Entering to the mausoleum, we could admire the tomb of the empress consort Mumtaz Mahal, located exactly in the middle of the octagonal structure, and on the left side, constructed 30 years after, the tomb of the emperor Shah Jahan. It was surprising to know that these ones were only illusory, in fact the real sarcophagi of the two emperors were situated in the crypt, in the lower part of the chamber. Unfortunately, tourists were not allowed to take pictures here.
At the end of our guided tour, we went to the roof terrace of the Taj Mahal and, after walking into a small dome, we had an amazing view of the Yamuna river and of the Mughal garden. The beauty of such a landscape left me speechless.

We had some time to rest and to take some other pictures before the ending of our journey.
Before leaving, we had also the opportunity to buy some little gifts for our loved ones at the very recommended shop “The Silver Hut”, where I bought two tiny and colored elephants that could remind me the colours of this city. I only wish I will have the opportunity to visit it again, in future!
For the moment, it has been a unique experience that I will never forget.
Thank You HEEALS!

Effect Of COVID PANDEMIC On MENSTRUAL HYGIENE

Effect Of COVID PANDEMIC On MENSTRUAL HYGIENE

-Ecenur

Menstruation is the phenomenon that most women experience all around the world. The

experience is yet not the same for all of them. There are multiple factors which affect the

experience of menstruation for women. One of the factors is the taboo that menstruation

exposes in the country. Some women sadly cannot express themselves freely on menstruation

because of being taboo in the country. In addition to this, women are exposed to gender

inequality in their countries thereby leading them to not have freedom of expression enough

in terms of menstruation management. Another challenge that women face during

menstruation period is lack of water supply or the sources within the country .It influences

the menstrual hygiene that reduces the menstrual quality of women so the situation becomes

aggravated for the women. Therefore both social restrictions and the sources of the country

affects management of menstruation. In recent times, with the covid pandemic ,the

management of menstrual hygiene was exacerbated. This text aims to explain how

menstrual hygiene during covid pandemic affected gender inequality women experience in

their countries.

According to estimation;1.8 billion girls, women, and gender non-binary people menstruate

in the world.Howerver, millions of them across the world cannot manage their monthly

menstuation in a healthy way. This is due to gender inequality, discriminatory social norms,

cultural taboos, poverty and lack of basic services often cause menstrual health and hygiene

that still become neglected.(Unicef,2020).During Covid pandemic, it was inherent that the

COVID-19 had multiple impacts on girls’ and women’s ability to manage their menstruation

and their health. The effects differ from country to country and its ability to respond through

social protection and health system. The most influenced by Covid pandemic in terms of

menstrual hygiene are the countries which were the poorest and weakest to economic and

social shocks.(Unicef,2020). The impacts of Covid Pandemic on Menstrual hygiene can be

stated as disruption in the production and distribution of menstrual hygiene supplies due to

physical distancing measures in factories, repurposing of manufacturing plants to produce

personal protective equipment, restrictions on import and ground transport and closures. In

addition to this,Insufficient menstrual hygiene facilities and supplies to manage menstruation

with privacy in health care facilities, quarantine and isolation centers and at home have

caused women to experience severe challenges during their menstrual periods. Moreover,Girls

and women hospitalized or in quarantine centers for COVID-19 had also lack of access for

washing their hands and menstrual hygiene supplies.Furthermore,Gaps in provision of water

and sanitation service, such as disruption of safe water supply or due to increased costs driven

by scarcity of supply during Covid which challenged lives of women in terms of

menstruation management.(Unicef,2020).

Apart from this, while women experienced such difficulties due to Covid pandemic, they are

also exposed to gender inequality and bias which have aggravated the menstrual hygiene

problem during the pandemic. For instance,Women and girls have to satisfy severe extra

requirements for privacy when they use wash facilities, due to patriarchal norms of female

modesty and cultural as well religious taboo on menstruation. In other words, the pandemic

has exacerbated existing gendered barriers to wash access that create unique wash and

menstrual hygiene management challenges for women and girls every

day(Benini,2021).Therefore,women are exposed more inequality on menstrual hygiene

which has brought duplicated challenged for them during the covid pandemic.

To conclude, the Covid 19 led to multiple challenges for the women. It exacerbated the access

of wash which is essential for menstrual hygiene .In addition to this, women and girls had to

have extra requirements for privacy when they use wash facilities, due to patriarchal norms

of female modesty and taboo on menstruation. Therefore,it can be stated that Covid 19

deteriorated the problem which was already exist and challenging for women experiencing

gender inequality in their countries .

Why menstrual hygiene is so important?

Why menstrual hygiene is so important?

Beatrice Tozzi

Menstrual hygiene is a hygiene practice that allows women to avoid health problems during menses. In fact, menstrual blood can cause health issues such as  irritations or UTI (urinal tract infection).

A really good habit that women can learn is to change sanitary pads (or tampon, or menstrual cup) very regularly during their period, in order to prevent any kind of infections, for example changing pads every 4-6 hours. Another good practice is to wash properly the areas that are in contact with pads.

The majority of Indian girls, and their families, suffer from economic difficulties: a reason that doesnt allow them to afford sanitary napkins during menses. This problem leads to the fact that they simply dont know how to properly use pads, and how to take care of their bodies during menstruation.

Social taboos, still today, also play a major role when we talk about menses and sanitary pads. In marginalized communities the exchange of information is urgent and can really impact the quality of life of so many girls.

A study conducted in 2011 by Anant Kumar and Kamiya Srivastava[1] among 117 adolescent girls and 41 mothers from communities and classes in Ranchi, Jharkhand, represent a concrete sampleof the situation concerns women and menstruation.

The study reveals that although menstruation is a fundamental part of the reproductive system, in Indian society they’re treated with secrecy. For example, when a girl has her period, it could be forbidden for her to enter the puja room, or the kitchen.

However, the study also shows that the girls interviewed are curios to learn more about menses. It is the lack of information that produce taboos and ideas that consider menstruation as unhealthy and something to be afraid of.

This study also presents some strategies to make girls aware of their bodies and of their menses. For example, the author suggeste the creation of “awareness program”, in which posters, flip chart and other informational tools should be shared. In addition, menstrual hygiene should become a school subject.

These are the reasons that led us, Heeals, to realize a program for spreading awareness on the importance of menstrual hygiene and gender equality precisely in these areas. With our project TIME FOR MENSTRUAL HYGIENE AND GENDER EQUALITYwe will focus specifically on school-age girls, who attend schools in villages or urban slums, in the National Capital Region (Delhi), Gurgaon (Haryana) and Western Uttar Pradesh. We will also be able to hold workshops on the issues that concern our campaign, trying to fill the gap of knowledge about these important and fundamental topics.

11th October International Day of the Girl

The world is home to more than 1.1 billion girls under age 18, who are poised to become the largest generation of female leaders, entrepreneurs and change-makers the world has ever seen.

My Voice, Our Equal Future

Progress for adolescent girls has not kept pace with the realities they face today, and COVID-19 has reinforced many of these gaps. This year, under the theme, “My Voice, Our Equal Future”, let’s seize the opportunity to be inspired by what adolescent girls see as the change they want, the solutions- big and small- they are leading and demanding across the globe.

In 2020, we commemorate 25 years since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action – the global agenda for advancing the rights and empowerment of women and girls, everywhere. Generation Equality was also launched in early 2020 as a multi-year, multi-partner campaign and movement for bold action on gender equality. A clear narrative and actions related to the needs and opportunities of adolescent girls and their solutions is central to the Generation Equality mission.

As adolescent girls worldwide assert their power as change-makers, International Day of the Girl 2020 will focus on their demands to:

Live free from gender-based violence, harmful practices, and HIV and AIDS

Learn new skills towards the futures they choose

Lead as a generation of activists accelerating social change
