How to Deal with PCOD: At Home, In Clinic, and More...

How to Deal with PCOD: At Home, In Clinic, and More...

By Saniya Islam

With the mood swings and loss of motivation clouding your life recently, perhaps you have felt like you hit rock bottom. Good news, you might have instead hit a PCOD diagnosis. Polycystic Ovarian Disease

(PCOD) is defined as a medical condition in which a woman’s ovaries produce abundant numbers of underdeveloped eggs, either immature or partially mature, that become cysts over time - according to Dr. Kamna Nagpal of Max Healthcare. Despite the daunting medical vocabulary, this is a common condition that affects 20% of Indian women and is easily treatable. Read further to understand the symptoms of PCOD, and if you are possibly one of the five women affected by it.

Polycystic Ovarian Disease, in spite of its frequent effect on many women, is often a disease suffered in silence, as many are unaware of its symptoms. Symptoms of PCOD include issues with infertility, irregular periods, heavy menstrual bleeding, weight gain, balding or excess body hair, acne, depression, and sleeping disorders. These symptoms lead to serious implications upon women’s mental health and stimulation due to the hormone imbalance created by a secretion of androgen (male hormones) from ovarian cysts. Women experience low self-esteem, mood swings, and pessimistic social relationships - leading to 34% of women diagnosed with PCOD having clinical depression and 45% of women diagnosed with PCOD suffering from anxiety.

Although upon the surface level it may seem like an objective health issue, PCOD is an effect of various environmental and social issues. When using spatial analysis, it can be observed that the areas with the most women impacted by Polycystic Ovarian Disease often overlap with those that suffer under pollution and sedentary lifestyles impacted by the culture around them. Though you may be experiencing these symptoms or live in this environment, ensure a clinical diagnosis from your doctor prior to attempting to treat PCOD, as there may be other underlying medical conditions at work.

If you are diagnosed, however, there are a myriad of ways to treat and manage your PCOD. The easiest and most effective way to naturally manage PCOD is through a lifestyle change. By adjusting your dietary plans in order to accommodate a low-cholesterol diet, PCOD can be improved upon massively. Furthermore, consistent exercise and lowering overall body fat by about 5% is an extremely effective method of regulating PCOD. Despite the plentiful medications such as progestin, birth control pills, or metformin, an overall shift in perspective and health is the most accessible and worthwhile method in administering PCOD.

To close, PCOD, seemingly a daunting condition, is one that is extremely common and treatable. Women everywhere - remember that this is a struggle that many share and simply requires your effort and time. To aid women in similar conflicts and continue to educate, donate to HEEALS NGO.

Menarche Matters!

Sowing the Seeds of Change: Breaking the Link Between Junk Food and Early Menarche- Bhavana Jala Nerella (Volunteer at HEEALS)

If a girl has her first menstruation before age 12 it leads to an increase in breast cancer risk by 50% than when compared to menarche at 16. Interested? I bet you are. Adolescence is a crucial period of transition from puberty to adulthood, during which teenagers experience various physical, psychological, and social changes. One significant milestone in this phase is Menarche, which marks the onset of regular menstrual cycles in healthy females. Although food plays a pivotal role in holistic growth, nourishment, procreation, and the cycle of life, the present-day way of living has led to the increased prevalence of fast food and junk food consumption. Consuming fast food leads to excessive intake of sodium and saturated fast.

As the consumption of fast food increases across urban, suburban, and rural areas of India, there is a noticeable rise in menstrual problems such as early menarche, irregular menses, dysmenorrhea, and excessive bleeding. It is crucial for us to assess these dietary habits, make necessary modifications, and promote healthier lifestyles for future generations. While many factors may be beyond our control, we can collectively strive to change what is within our reach. Although fast food may appear convenient and cost-effective in the short term, it eventually leads to regrets. Over consumption of junk food reduces our intake of essential nutrients such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and grains. This deficiency contributes to nutritional imbalances, which are considered a significant factor in inducing hormonal dysfunction , leading to various menstrual problems as mentioned earlier.

Let's take a look at some examples of the harmful substances found in junk food: - Eggs in junk food may contain propylene glycol (petrol), tertiary butyl hydroquinone (nail polish), and calcium silicate. - Chips often contain chemical substances like poly-dimethylsiloxane, a silicone-based plastic coating used to maintain shelf life, color, and flavor. - Deep-fried nuggets may not contain real chicken, potato, or vegetables. Instead, they often consist of a pre-nugget mix with mesh found in plastics and artificial coloring. So are these food still a quick fix to your hunger pangs?

That’s for you to decide. A study conducted among 2,033 girls in Shanghai revealed a significantly higher risk of early onset menarche associated with an unhealthy diet pattern. Children who consumed unhealthy foods were 1.25 times more likely to experience early menarche compared to those who consumed healthy foods. In another study involving 500 adolescent school girls in Pokhara, Nepal, a case-control study demonstrated that 97.7% of girls who experienced menarche before the age of 11 regularly consumed junk food. However, the most alarming finding was the severe psycho-socio-economic impact of early menarche on a young woman's life. This impact includes increased vulnerability to abuse, sexual exploitation, early marriage, excessive workload, eating disorders, early pregnancy, and the need for medications during pregnancy. The severity of the impact of early menarche on a girl's future is drastic, and as a society, we have a responsibility to protect and empower women to be their best selves. The strength and prosperity of a community depend on the safety and quality of life for women. It is essential that we stand up for them and initiate change, starting with small acts such as educating families and children about the effects of poor diet on menarche.

Although early menarche may seem like a scientific term, its implications are deeply rooted into all areas of a woman's life. By modifying our dietary habits and promoting healthier lifestyles, we can safeguard the well-being and future of the younger generations. HEEALS (Health, Education, Environment and Livelihood Society) is a grassroots non-profit/ NGO in Gurgaon, India and is championing the cause of menstrual health, sanitation, the importance of a healthy diet, and the promotion of women's well-being. Through these initiatives, we break the silence surrounding menstrual health, providing education on hygiene management and access to affordable sanitary products. We also conduct workshops on the importance of a balanced diet for menstrual health, highlighting the detrimental effects of junk food.

These efforts empower women, reduce stigmas, and enhance the quality of life for women and girls in India. Despite the challenges we face, I am deeply hopeful for the future of women worldwide. The journey may not be easy, but we will always strive forward.

WHY DO GRASSROOTS MATTER?

WHY DO GRASSROOTS MATTER?

By Sachin S Solanki

In today’s world where development still remains to percolate down to the lowest of the low sections, no country can truly deliver on its promises without a stable and empowered civil society. Therefore, asustainable network of bodies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) is a sine qua nonfor plugging the gaps in the service delivery to the last mile. However, it cannot be undermined that NGOs unlike a ‘for-profit’ institution lack sufficient resources and revenue to fund their services. The issue becomes accentuated when we look at the sections of civil society that work directly at the grassroots level.

GRASSROOTS MATTER

Grassroots NGOs are located at the critical intersection of a range of institutions that mark our society such as race, caste, religion, community, family and gender to name a few. By their proximity to these institutions at the ground level, they are better aware of the nitty-gritty of local functioning that is often overlooked and underminedby the more centralised and unreachable parts of civil society.A large well-funded NGO undoubtedlyhas a better efficiencyand logistical capacity to deliver on a range of commitments, but it is also found that owing to their very centralised and strait-jacket nature, accessibility and reachability to the final mile is often piecemeal. Per contra, NGOs and civil society organisations working on a localised level amongst people are more effective in organising local participation and promising better outcomes.

Furthermore, it has been observed that the motives of civil society are better translated into real outcomes if local communities are involved in the process. Be it through teaching, distribution of sanitary pads or raising funds for a local calamity, grassroots NGOs because of their close-knit size are a perfect platform for people to become the change they wish to see. Grassroots civil society also plays a vital role in accomplishing better standards of living, enhanced skills, and empowerment of youth, women and minorities.

Last but not least, localised NGOs are also significant because of their democratic ability to encourage effective communication around key issues, where all viewpoints are heard and deliberated upon. This is in stark contrast to the more centralised and non-localised bodies where, more often than not, a dominant viewpoint with more muscle and money power gets more credit and representation in the decision-making processes.

A TALE OF BROKEN FUNDING

For civil society, means to access funding are grossly limited. Corporate Social Responsibility or CSR funding forms one of the few channels and hence becomes a major portion of funding for civil society. Other options are localised fundraising and receiving resources through charityor donations. However, over time it has been noticed that CSR funding is often skewed and marred by a range of different biases. Be it the regional bias where funding is targeted to a selectgeography or region, or the bias in favour of a certain sector.

A recent study by Ashoka University brings to notice that more than 50% of CSR companies are concentrated in prosperous states like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, while states such as Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh receive little. Another issue at play here is the pronounced lack of diversity in terms of sectors receiving funding. A study by Economic Times points to an asymmetrical situation where funding towards certain sectors like education and pollution outweighs other areas like menstruation, gender-based violence and internet disparity. This skewed spending becomes a major obstacle for sections of civil society that are dedicated to a single issue or cause.

It is also true that in recent times, big corporates have come up with their own ‘personalized’ civil society and NGOs, thereby diverting their funds to their own bodies. This in turn fuels a self-sustaining and self-serving cycle that excluded grassroots and localised bodies. Another important and undeniable role is played by the citizen themselves, after all a civil society without a society to back it up becomes dysfunctional. It has been found that charity and donations offered by people are either grossly inadequate or often remain largely skewed in favour of someone or something.

Gaurav Kashyap, Managing Director at HEEALS, a grassroots Non-Profit/NGO based in Gurgaon shared his experience of the struggle that NGOs and civil society bodies like HEEALS face while accessing funding. “Despite working for 12 years at the grassroots level working in diverse fields such as Health,Education, Environment,Water, Sanitation, Menstrual hygiene,Gender Equality Projects, the CSR funding has never really come through”, he adds. This not only underlines the strain and disadvantages that localised non-profit bodies undergo in search of funds but also seriously undermines the confidence of today’s youth in the efficacy of civil society. Furthermore, it gives rise to poor incentives and massive roadblocks for NGOs and other localised bodies like HEEALS in their objective of going the extra mile in public service delivery.

WAY FORWARD

So far we have seen that localised NGOs lack the wherewithal to infuse their processes with capital and efficiency. Lack of funding dents their resource mobilization ability and eventually unleashesa perpetuating cycle of inability and deficiency. But, there is a way out of this.

Firstly, we have to understand that a robust and self-reliant civil society is not a threat to the security and stability of society but a supporter of it. They play a critical role in bridging the gaps between the Government and the people. A strengthened civil society helps nurture deep linkages between the process of policy-making and the people who have a stake in the making of the policy. So, in a way, it is true that an empowered civil society ensures an empowered citizenry and hence we must do all that it takes to infuse power in the hands of the civil society.

Second, civil society too has to come up with fresh, creative and innovative ways to engage with diverse sections of the society and ensuring that they do not become echo chambers of a single ideology or political persuasion. Attempts must be made to stay relevant and close to the issues they seek to redress. For this, a continuous and constructive engagement with all stakeholders is necessary.

To conclude, an empowered civil society guarantees the realization of Mahatma Gandhi’s idea of trusteeship, interdependence and bonding between the rich and the underprivileged, where society becomes a complete whole of many connected parts. What is needed is an ecosystem where Government, Non-Government Organisations and the Corporate Sector can come together and join hands in ensuring effective and inclusive service delivery.

MENSTRUAL HYGIENE MENTAL HEALTH AND GENDER EQUALITY FOR BOY AND GIRLS

HEEALS organizes workshops on Menstrual Hygiene , Mental Health And Gender Equality For Boys and Girls in Gurgaon and NCR schools. In our Menstrual Hygiene and Adolescence lessons we included Boys and Girls . It is important for both to know about adolescence and physical changings that happen in their body during the period of puberty but also for the boys to be aware of changing that happens in the girls body, during adolescence, in particular about menstrual flow. It is part of the personal culture, to be conscious and not to tease. In the end of the workshop we distributed sanitary pads , menstrual hygiene and wash booklets and stationary items to children. With your constant supply of sanitary pads, soap bars and stationary items many children will access to basic hygiene and education materials.

A Trip To One Of The 7 Wonders of WORLD

A Trip To One Of The 7 Wonders of WORLD

Hello everyone! My name is Carlotta, I am a 22-year-old Italian student, recently graduated from the University of Padua. Following my graduation, I decided to apply as project coordinator at the non-profit organization HEEALS, in India. I would like to share with you one of the wonderful experiences I was able to have, during my internship.

A trip entirely organized thanks to HEEALS, with an experienced guide, meals included, and a private taxi driver, made it possible to realize my dream of seeing the beauties of Agra City in one single day.

My journey began at 2 a.m., when the taxi driver picked me up directly from my accommodation and drove me to New Delhi, where I met the second driver and those who would be my traveling companions.

From here, my overnight journey officially began. After meeting and exchanging some small talk with my traveling companions, I was finally able to relax and admire the scenery outside the window with the dark and half-empty roads of the night. It is fascinating to think how the same roads, which are crowded with cars, motorcycles and tuk-tuks during the day, can empty out completely at night and make way for an almost unreal silence.

The trip took 3 hours in all, and I woke up at the crack of dawn. After a few minutes, the car stopped and a guide joined us. We had finally arrived in Agra! The first place we visited was, of course, the Taj Mahal!

We left our backpacks in the car and immediately headed for our first destination.

Sunrise is the best time of day to see and photograph it. The sunlight reflects off the white marble from which its octagonal walls are made, and makes it bright and radiant.

The guide gave us some time to take some pictures with our cameras and after that he began his explanation.

The first thing we were able to admire was the Guest House (or Darwaza), that is completely built of red sandstone in contrast to the main building in the center, the mausoleum, and that is perfectly simmetrical and of the same appearence and proportions of the Mosque, which is located to the east of the Taj Mahal. The gateaway of the Guest House is positioned so that the arched door forms an artistic frame for the Taj Mahal.

In contrast to these two structures, the Taj Mahal is built entirely of white marble and meticulously decorated. It is a perfect symmetrical planned building.
What impressed me the most were the detailed floreal patterns carved in the marble and the elegant arabic calligraphy at the tomb entrance.

Entering to the mausoleum, we could admire the tomb of the empress consort Mumtaz Mahal, located exactly in the middle of the octagonal structure, and on the left side, constructed 30 years after, the tomb of the emperor Shah Jahan. It was surprising to know that these ones were only illusory, in fact the real sarcophagi of the two emperors were situated in the crypt, in the lower part of the chamber. Unfortunately, tourists were not allowed to take pictures here.
At the end of our guided tour, we went to the roof terrace of the Taj Mahal and, after walking into a small dome, we had an amazing view of the Yamuna river and of the Mughal garden. The beauty of such a landscape left me speechless.

We had some time to rest and to take some other pictures before the ending of our journey.
Before leaving, we had also the opportunity to buy some little gifts for our loved ones at the very recommended shop “The Silver Hut”, where I bought two tiny and colored elephants that could remind me the colours of this city. I only wish I will have the opportunity to visit it again, in future!
For the moment, it has been a unique experience that I will never forget.
Thank You HEEALS!

YOUR CLOTH DONATION WILL GIVE PEN AND PENCIL TO CHILDREN

Today We Received Cloth Donation From Our Donors . We Are Thankful To Our Donor For Their Kind Donation.

Education is dependent on multiple factors – the availability of stationery items being one of them. The educational system in our side of the world is inclined to promote technology and digitization. But you can’t deny the fact that the pencil remains to be a powerful tool. Like books, it is the first step to embark on an educational journey. Is it not? And yet, many children from marginalized and vulnerable communities try to get an education but don’t have access to basic school supplies. Due to social, economical problems they are unable to access to the required stationary. What can a pencil do for all of us? Amazing things. It can write transcendent poetry, uplifting music, or life-changing equations; it can sketch the future, give life to untold beauty, and communicate the full-force of our love and aspirations.
We at HEEALS Give Clothes To Needy One And Sell Clothes And the Money Gained in return will go to the Stationary Donation Drive organized for children from marginalized & Vulnerable communities in National Capital Region, Delhi, Gurgaon and Uttar Pradesh Schools .
This Stationary drive is open all round the year to reach many children . Stationary item set cost Rs. 10 which include one pencil, ruler, eraser and pen which can be earned by selling old clothes only. Isn’t it wonderful how much of a difference we all can make in somebody’s lives by a simple act of generosity. Become a helping hand in Children Education. Not everybody gets an opportunity to give. You have the privilege to do so.YOUR CLOTH DONATION WILL GIVE PEN AND PENCIL TO CHILDREN

Gender Inequality In Education

Gender Inequality In Education

-Sakshi Choudhary

Gender inequality in education is a pervasive issue that has been prevalent in many societies around the world. It manifests in different forms, such as disparities in enrollment rates, academic performance, access to educational resources, and opportunities for higher education and employment. This essay will explore the reasons behind gender inequality in education from both a girl's and a boy's perspective. From a girl's perspective, one of the primary reasons for gender inequality in education is gender stereotypes. Society tends to view girls as homemakers and caregivers, limiting their potential in other areas such as education. As a result, girls are often discouraged from pursuing academic excellence, and they receive less support and resources than boys.

“Fighting For Gender Equality Is Not A Responsibility For Women Only. The Society Should Be Held Accountable For It Too. Gender Equality World Is A Better World. We At HEEALS Believe In Gender Equality “  -HEEALS

This creates a cycle of inequality, where girls receive less education and end up in low-paying jobs, while boys are encouraged to pursue higher education and more prestigious careers. Another factor that contributes to gender inequality in education is poverty. Girls from poor families are more likely to be denied educational opportunities due to their financial status. In many societies, girls are viewed as an economic burden to their families, and their education is not considered a priority. Girls from poor families are also more likely to be subjected to child labor, early marriage, and other forms of exploitation, which limit their access to education. Moreover, gender-based violence is a significant barrier to education for girls. In many countries, girls are subjected to violence and harassment on their way to school or at school, which can lead to dropping out of school or poor academic performance. For example, a girl who has experienced sexual violence may feel too ashamed or traumatized to continue with her education.

From a boy's perspective, gender inequality in education is also a concern. Boys who do not fit into the traditional masculine mold can face discrimination and bullying from their peers. For example, boys who show an interest in traditionally feminine activities such as art or music can be ostracized by their peers, leading to poor academic performance and dropping out of school. Furthermore, the education system often favors girls over boys, leading to boys being left behind. Many educators believe that girls are more conscientious and hardworking, and as such, they tend to give girls more attention and resources than boys. This can lead to boys feeling neglected and unmotivated, which can impact their academic performance. In addition, boys from low-income families also face barriers to education. Boys from poor families are more likely to be subjected to child labor and other forms of exploitation, which can limit their access to education. They may also lack access to educational resources such as books, computers, and the internet, which can put them at a disadvantage compared to their peers.

In conclusion, gender inequality in education is a complex issue that affects both girls and boys. It stems from a combination of factors such as gender stereotypes, poverty, and gender-based violence. To address this issue, there needs to be a concerted effort by governments, educators, and society as a whole to provide equal opportunities and resources to both girls and boys. This includes addressing gender stereotypes, providing financial support for girls from low-income families, and ensuring that schools are safe spaces for all students, regardless of their gender. Only through a collective effort can we eliminate gender inequality in education and ensure that all students have equal opportunities to pursue their dreams and reach their full potential.
