A new technique for female infanticides

A new technique for female infanticides

The Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act, established in 1994, was created to avoid abortions based on sex selection. Revealing the sex of the fetus is a crime in India, punishable by a fine of Rs 10,000 and a sentence of 3 years in prison.

Why people, still today, should choose sex selection? There are a lot of causes. To answer this question, we must consider some social and economic aspects. Generally, a male child is preferred to a daughter especially for the type of economic support that they are able to provide to their families when they're older. But its not just a matter of monetary support, however, because it must also be considered that parents think still nowadays that only son will keep the family's last name, even though women can keep it. A daughter, on the other side, is seen as a “burden”[1], especially on financial aspect (for example for the question of dowry in weddings).

Techniques such as In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) allows future parents to discover the sex of the embryo(s) that will then be implanted in the uterus of the mother. IVF is the only procedure that ensures a sex selection, and that is why it is so - sadly - popular.

Sex selection, in India, is forbidden. However, there are cases in which clinics offer some travel packages abroad to couples who want to conceive through IVF to have boys, in country where sex selection is allowed, as in Mexico, Dubai or Thailand.[2] Sex selection is something that is practiced mainly among rich and well-educated people, due to the expensive cost of this treatment.

Sex selection made through IVF can be seen as the modern and capitalized version of female infanticides. This creates a demographic bubble, in which the male population is significantly greater than the female population. For example, in 2020, the sex ratio of Indian population was 108.18 males per 100 females.[3]This decompensation is definitely working women and, in general, of their poor self-determination as a part of Indian society.

Until women will be considered inferior compared to men, girls will be simply prevented from being born at all. Laws will not be enough if society does not change completely the way of thinking about women and girls.
