Anemia, Beyond the check

 

Anemia is a condition in which you lack enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to your body's tissues. Having anemia, also referred to as low hemoglobin, can make you feel tiredglobin, and weak. There are many forms of anemia, each with its own cause. Recently published National Family Health Survey(NFHS 5) data shows people of all most all age group, especially women are vulnerable to anaemia in the country. The data reports that 67% of children below 59 months of age  suffer from anaemia which is 9% more than what observed in previous survey. Adolescent girls belonging to the age group 15 years to 19 years is found to have 59% prevalence and that about 57% of reproductive women population  (15 years to 49 years) also found to have low hemoglobin count than required which is 4% higher than previously reported

Some of the important contributors of this current situation includes malnutrition, lack of proper sanitation, locally endemic infectious diseases etc.  Thus it is clearly understood that the problems regarding anemia cannot be covered by nearby medical supplementation

 The central government is constantly keeping an eye on the issue of anemia since independence. The recent program "Anaemiamukt Bharat" is working on 6×6×6 strategy. It implies to give special attention for six vulnerable beneficiaries through six different interventions via six institutional mechanism.

Keeping the policy apart, individuals can initiate some lifestyle modifications such as including micronutrient food in diet, maintaining proper sanitation for preventing intestine infections which  create loss of essential nutrients etc. Without concious effort from individuals, state won't be able to create an impact on anaemia burden of the country.

International Migrant Day

 In recent years, #conflict, insecurity, and the effects of climate change, war and conflict have heavily contributed to the forced movement whether within countries or across borders. In 2020 over 281 million people were international migrants while over 59 million people were internally displaced by the end of 2021. Regardless of the reasons that compel people to move, migrants and displaced people represent some of the most vulnerable and marginalized groups in society, and

are often exposed to abuse and exploitation, have limited access to essential services including healthcare, and are faced with xenophobic attacks and stigma fueled by misinformation. On the other hand, many migrant workers are often in temporary, informal, or unprotected jobs, which exposes them to a greater risk of insecurity, layoffs, and poor working conditions. Due to persistent lack of safe and regular migration pathways, millions continue to take perilous journeys each year. Since 2014 more than 50,000 migrants have lost their lives on migratory routes across the world. Despite this, migrants have proven to be a source of prosperity, innovation, and #sustainabledevelopment to countries of origin, transit, and host countries. Their financial contribution through remittance offers a lifeline to families and spur local markets especially those of Low- and Middle-Income Countries while their role in the labour market remains invaluable. Their knowledge, networks, and skills have greatly contributed to the development of resilient communities. Strengthening the contribution of migrants to sustainable development requires collective effort to improve the governance of migration and addressing the challenges migrants face. Migrants and displaced people represent some of the most vulnerable and marginalized groups in society. Migrants have proven to be a source of prosperity, innovation, and sustainable development to countries of origin, transit, and host countries. No state can manage migration effectively and sustainably in isolation.

Red Planet Day !

Red Planet Day is celebrated on November 28 as it commemorates the launch of the Spacecraft Mariner 4 by NASA in 1964, which was the first craft to ever reach Mars. It took almost eight full months for the craft to reach the red planet, finally performing a fly-by on July 14, 1965.

Mars is only about 1/2 the size of Earth.

• Galileo Galilei was the first person to view Mars by using a telescope. The name of the planet came from the Roman god, which is related to its red appearance.

• Mars has weather that is made up of extreme temperatures and, being further away from the Sun, it is generally colder than Earth. Temps can range from -191 degrees F to +81 degrees F.

• The gravity on the Red Planet is roughly 1/3 of that of planet Earth. This means that a person who weighed 100 pounds on Earth would only weigh about 38 pounds due to the difference in the pull of gravity.

• Because it is further away from the Sun, it takes Mars a lot longer to make its orbit. A ‘year’ on Mars would take around 687 days, which is almost twice the length of a year on Earth.

World Toilet Day 2022 is 'Making the Invisible Visible'

Sanitation for all is a global development priority. HEEALS encourage behavioural change and the implementation of policies to increase access to sanitation among the poor, along with a call to end the practice of open-air defecation, which it deemed extremely harmful to public health. Hygiene promotion, the provision of basic sanitation services, and sewerage and wastewater treatment and reuse in the context of integrated water management is our prime prime priority.

World Toilet Day is 'Making the Invisible Visible', which focuses on the impact of poor sanitation on groundwater, and how inadequate sanitation systems spread human waste into rivers, lakes and soil, polluting underground wate.

Groundwater and sanitation – making the invisible visible

World Toilet Day 2022 focuses on the impact of the sanitation crisis on groundwater.  


This observance, held annually since 2013, celebrates toilets and raises awareness of the 3.6 billion people living without access to safely managed sanitation. It is about taking action to tackle the global sanitation crisis and achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6: sanitation and water for all by 2030.

The 2022 campaign ‘Making the invisible visible’ explores how inadequate sanitation systems spread human waste into rivers, lakes and soil, polluting underground water resources.

However, this problem seems to be invisible. Invisible because it happens underground. Invisible because it happens in the poorest and most marginalized communities.

Groundwater is the world’s most abundant source of freshwater. It supports drinking water supplies, sanitation systems, farming, industry and ecosystems. As climate change worsens and populations grow, groundwater is vital for human survival.

The central message of World Toilet Day 2022 is that safely managed sanitation protects groundwater from human waste pollution. Currently, the world is seriously off track to meet the promise of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6.2: to ensure safe toilets for all by 2030.

The campaign urges governments to work on average four times faster to ensure SDG 6.2 is achieved on time. Policymakers are also called upon to fully recognize the connection between sanitation and groundwater in their plans to safeguard this vital water resource.

Key messages you should know on World Toilet Day 2022

• Safe sanitation protects groundwater. Toilets that are properly sited and connected to safely managed sanitation systems, collect, treat and dispose of human waste, and help prevent human waste from spreading into groundwater.

• Sanitation must withstand climate change. Toilets and sanitation systems must be built or adapted to cope with extreme weather events, so that services always function and groundwater is protected.

• Sanitation action is urgent. We are seriously off track to ensure safe toilets for all by 2030. With only eight years left, the world needs to work four times faster to meet our promise.

• Groundwater accounts for approximately 99 per cent of all liquid freshwater on Earth. (UN-Water 2022)

• Groundwater provides half of all water withdrawn for domestic use, including the drinking water for the vast majority of the rural population. (UN-Water 2022)

• Globally, at least 2 billion people use a drinking water source contaminated with faeces. (WHO 2019)

• Every day, over 800 children under age five years old die from diarrhoea linked to unsafe water, sanitation and poor hygiene. (UNICEF 2021)
