Why Corporate Volunteering

Why Corporate Volunteering Is Important !

by Valentina

Corporate volunteering can be considered as a WIN-WIN strategy and initiative with benefits for the environment, the community and the firm itself.

As a matter of fact, this kind of activity improves the reputation of companies, and boosts the motivation of the employees, develops their skills and improves their empathy and team-working attitude.

In such a way, a model of success can be created, linking training, fieldwork and cooperation moments, which can lead to earnings in the long run. There are many PRACTICES through which employees can sustain a greener and environmentally-friendly way of working and living. For example, they could avoid to buy prepackaged water, bringing their own bottle from home, or they could also employ their artistic skills to paint walls.

Furthermore, since NGOs work non-stop and their staff also have a social life, company’s workers could substitute them during the week, sharing their food and donating their time, while having joy and gratitude back. Firms are more and more keen on realizing corporate volunteering programmes, because they take into account the social commitment of their staff as a valuable resource to share.

Benefits are grasped both by NGOs and their helper, which feel more accomplished and appreciated on the human side and consider themselves as part of the community rather than only of the economic system.

To sum up, corporate volunteering both creates an impact in the local community and engages employees with CSR efforts.

All this said, it should be remembered that in order to understand how best to start for a corporate volunteering journey, it’s crucial to know what workers want from their volunteering experiences. Once their needs are identified, the firm can work to satisfy them.

·    Corporate volunteering is a way for businesses to enable their employees to give back and contribute to communities. It’s usually accompanied by volunteering time off (VTO) or other policies that empower employees to work with a larger purpose outside of their world of work. Corporate volunteering is a pillar of a company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) and/or employee engagement strategy. Corporate volunteering programs came about to build more engaged and valued workforces.

Why is Corporate Social Responsibility relevant for NGOs?

Why is Corporate Social Responsibility relevant for NGOs?

   By Valentina

Non-profit organizations’ CSR can be considered as the purest form of social responsibility, since it is not simply a subsidiary activity, but rather their core life purpose.

CSR importance along the years has increased thanks to the necessity of demonstrating companies’ values to outside, contributing in the meanwhile to meaningful impactful sustainable projects that are able to positively shape communities.

The role of consumers is also crucial in this transition towards sustainability, since they are willing to actively support those brands that engage in fair practices.

Thus, always more often firms try to support nonprofits, making philanthropic projects more viable for those cashless organizations and creating long-lasting relationships among them.

But the most important reason why NGOs are crucial is that they are the means by which profit-oriented organizations implement CSR strategies and transform them from ideas into practice.

The worldwide recognition and support of NGOs’ initiatives is given by their strong, fast, low-cost role in the development of a better world, not only improving the economy, but also sustaining social justice, equality of genders  and quality of life. In order to do so, an active participation of citizens in decision-making processes is required.

In India NGOs are numerous and active mostly in health, education and rural development sectors, thanks to the financial support provided by the State, which is concerned about the social welfare of its citizens. These two entities, by working together hand in hand can ensure that millions of people, mostly children, are guaranteed with at least a basic level of education.

As a result, they had a crucial role in the formulation of policies and laws favoring the poorest and most disadvantaged part of the society, especially in the fight against human trafficking, violence on women and poverty.

Through these rules, people become always more aware of their rights and roles in the community, as well as of the resources at their disposal. They are now more able to face taboos and fight against environment deterioration and pollution.

The input that voluntary, non governmental associations bring, both at country and global levels, encourages involvement, enthusiasm and cooperation of people.

Fortunately, in the last years, there has been an increasing engagement with these kinds of organizations, as both the Government and the market need the partnership of trustful, dynamic and responsible not for profit organizations, thanks to their link and interest for life at grassroots level. Thus, NGOs have quickly become the most useful and effective alternative agencies for development.

Gender Equality In India: the importance of education in creating empowered women

Gender equality in India: the importance of education in creating empowered women

  • by Valentina

Gender equality has always been and still is a crucial issue in the development of a fair society, but education can and must play an active role in shaping it.

However, despite a high growth rate and various Government measures to encourage gender equality, the gap still exists in India. The fact is that educating women can play a very significant role in the improvement of the country, helping to reduce inequality and functioning as a way to upgrade their status inside the family and throughout time.

The empowerment of women has therefore become a worldwide topic of discussion, but this inequality and discrimination against them is an eradicated centuries-old global issue.

Thus, the question is, what do we actually mean by equality?

Generally, women and men should be treated equally in terms of work, education, marriage and politics. However, although the Constitution doesn’t make distinctions between them, the society has deprived the females of basic rights theoretically granted. As a matter of fact, the Indian Constitution considers equally the rights of its citizens, but in reality women and their representation in public roles and politics are still marginalized, leading to a lack of central control.

The EMPOWERMENT process can really make the difference by enabling each kind of individual to reach his full capacity, bettering his social, economic and political participation. Women can be the key element able to move the country forward and to funnel it in the right direction and transformation. They are needed for the living humanity and therefore it is imperative for them to be educated.

But how can we make a change?

By moving from marginalization, underestimation and weakness towards the exercise of power. And the most useful tool to do so and change the status of society is of course education, whose encouragement can help minimize the gender bias in the educational environments. It can also foster the concept of women participation in public roles for the attenuation of discrimination based on gender.

Another factor of fundamentally determinant in the Indian gender gap is POVERTY. According to data, the percentage of women in the total number of poor is 70%, a number which is strongly and directly correlated with the lack of employment chances and possibilities. But poverty means also lack of food resources and therefore malnutrition, hunger and other health problems, as well as an increase in mortality, homelessness and exclusion.

Finally, gender gap is also influenced and fostered by the absence of decision-making involvement of women, which could contribute to a better social, civil and cultural way of living.

All this said, the backwardness of females in the education system, as long as it continues to exist, will always be seen as a reason to not invest in the development of women's knowledge and to keep considering their role strictly bound to marriage and family.

And maybe, unluckily, this could be the starting point to solve.
