United Nations Day: The Double Driving Force of Change.

United Nations Day: The Double Driving Force of Change.

24 October, we celebrate United Nations Day. This date marks the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945. From the ashes of the Second World War, global leaders founded this organisation to guarantee peace, dialogue, and international cooperation. Currently, the UN action plans are guided by the 2030 Agenda. This historic universal programme was adopted by world leaders in September 2015. It was created to complete the work of the previous Millennium Development Goals, tackling the global challenges left unresolved. The 2030 Agenda is not something to be confined only to the top echelons of the UN, but it calls upon every single citizen of the world to commit. Indeed, true change requires a double driving force. It needs commitment from the top, through institutions and international treaties. But above all, it requires a strong push from the bottom, built through the practical, daily efforts of civil society.

Let us go into the details of the 2030 Agenda. Conceptually, its spirit is summarised by a clear principle: "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" (Brundtland Report, 1987). Concretely, this programme divides global challenges into precise categories, encompassing all 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Goals 1 to 4, along with Goal 6, relate to primary human needs. They aim to eradicate poverty and hunger, guaranteeing health, quality education, and universal access to clean water and sanitation. Goals 5, 10, and 16 focus on social justice. They promote gender equality, reduce inequalities, and build peaceful institutions. The group of Goals from 7 to 12, joined by 17, tackles economic development and cooperation. It demands clean energy, decent work, innovation, sustainable cities, responsible consumption, and global partnerships. Finally, Goals 13 to 15 protect the planet, imposing urgent climate action and the safeguarding of marine and terrestrial ecosystems.

Let us take a specific case: India, where the WASH sector faces enormous challenges. Almost half of the schools lack vital resources such as safe drinking water, separate toilets, and functioning sinks. This shortage threatens students' health, as drinking contaminated water and not washing hands encourage the spread of diseases and infections. Furthermore, these bad hygienic conditions discourage the continuation of their studies, leading many youths to drop out of school early.

This is exactly where the bottom-up push comes into play. Many Indian non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are working hard to resolve this emergency by operating in two ways. First, they educate young people on correct hygiene procedures (such as using soap and managing personal cleanliness). Second, they raise funds to install fundamental infrastructure, like water filters and safe sanitation facilities. Thanks to the help of teachers, volunteers, and donors, NGOs transform the school environment, providing the missing physical structures and guiding children towards healthy new habits. At this point, the virtuous cycle is triggered: the students return home and teach their parents what they have learned, spreading change throughout society.

As the case of the WASH sector in India demonstrates, the 2030 Agenda requires a perfect synergy between two forces. The top echelons of the UN determine the guidelines and conceptual rules to follow. However, on a practical level, a bottom-up push—led by NGOs, educators, and all the figures revolving around them—is equally essential. These two dimensions are interdependent: top-down directives without bottom-up action remain empty, while grassroots work without global goals is disorganised. Both are vital. This collective effort involves every one of us. As a citizen, you can actively participate in this grassroots movement in two ways. The first is physical: you can apply as a volunteer and work on the ground with one of these organisations. The second is financial: you can support these projects with a donation. Even a small contribution concretely helps to build a better world.

Gastrointestinal Infection In Children

Article By Ecenur Dede

Gastrointestinal Infection is one of the diseases that human-beings suffer in the world. The reason of such a disease can be depicted as not drinking enough water ,consuming contaminated water or foods ,genetic factors or contacting with already infected people.A lthough most gastrointestinal infections are acute or easily cured, some become chronic such as infections by Helicobacter pylori and Strongyloides stercoralis. (Procop,2001).Therefore,it is crucial to diagnose at early stages and have immediate medical response.Such infections can mostly be

witnessed in developing countries particularly in children. In this article,it will be explained the effects of gastrointestinal infection on children and the causes behind it Gastrointestinal infection affects the quality of lives in developing countries. The children in particular are influenced mostly by such infections such as diarrhea or gallstone. For instance, According to the World Health
Organization, diarrhea is the cause of 4% of deaths in global and
causes approximately 2.2 million people to die each year. It is defined as acute if lasting less than 7 days, prolonged if lasting 7 to 13 days, persistent if lasting 14 to 29 days, and chronic if lasting 30 days or longer. The reasons of contamination behind such a gastrointestinal infection are common bacterial, viral, and parasitic pathogens spread via food, via contaminated water, or spread from person to person. (Sell&Dolan,2018).Therefore,the quality of food, water and staying in distance from people who are contaminated are crucial factors for having protection of gastrointestinal infections.Apart from this,Gastroenteritis is also one of the intestinal infections that children suffer. It causes diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and other symptoms of digestive upset. In the global world, the most common causes of gastroenteritis in children are viruses, bacteria and intestinal parasites mentioned above .In global world, gastroenteritis is a major reason for childhood deaths, primarily in developing nations where sanitation and health care are poor.(HHA,2020).Although,There is no specific treatment for gastrointestinal infection in children, drinking enough water or food or have the water sanitation are one of the crucial treatments for preventing such contaminations. Some NGOs are also working for inhibiting such a situation or raise awareness about such infections. For instance Heeals is one of the NGOs that raises awareness on national and international level about sanitation, toilets and unsafe drinking water. Alongside awareness campaigns, HEEALS organization also ensures that communities are equipped to tackle these issues, by providing toilets in the areas most at risk, and by providing equipment such as water purification tablets, water tanks, soap and sanitary towels for young girls and boys. Therefore,it fuels the awareness on gastrointestinal infections. To conclude,In developing countries gastrointestinal infection is one of the crucial diseases that children are moslt affected along with the relatively old individuals .It is not only significant to have early medical response but also have water sanitation, drinking enough water and have the distance with people who have such infection. Therefore,NGOs like Heeals are essential organizations for preventing or raising awareness in such diseases.

WORLD HEALTH DAY 2022

Are we able to reimagine a world where clean air, water and food are available to all?Where economies are focused on health and well-being?Where cities are liveable and people have control over their health and the health of the planet?

In the midst of a pandemic, a polluted planet, increasing diseases like cancer, asthma, heart disease, on World Health Day 2022, WHO will focus global attention on urgent actions needed to keep humans and the planet healthy and foster a movement to create societies focused on well-being. WHO estimates that more than 13 million deaths around the world each year are due to avoidable environmental causes. This includes the climate crisis which is the single biggest health threat facing humanity. The climate crisis is also a health crisis.

Our political, social and commercial decisions are driving the climate and health crisis. Over 90% of people breathe unhealthy air resulting from burning of fossil fuels. A heating world is seeing mosquitos spread diseases farther and faster than ever before. Extreme weather events, land degradation and water scarcity are displacing people and affecting their health. Pollution and plastics are found at the bottom of our deepest oceans, the highest mountains, and have made their way into our food chain. Systems that produce highly processed, unhealthy foods and beverages are driving a wave of obesity, increasing cancer and heart disease while generating a third of global greenhouse gas emissions.
While the COVID-19 pandemic showed us the healing power of science, it also highlighted the inequities in our world. The pandemic has revealed weaknesses in all areas of society and underlined the urgency of creating sustainable well-being societies committed to achieving equitable health now and for future generations without breaching ecological limits. The present design of the economy leads to inequitable distribution of income, wealth and power, with too many people still living in poverty and instability. A well-being economy has human well-being, equity and ecological sustainability as its goals. These goals are translated into long-term investments, well-being budgets, social protection and legal and fiscal strategies. Breaking these cycles of destruction for the planet and human health requires legislative action, corporate reform and individuals to be supported and incentivized to make healthy choices.
April 7 is celebrated and observed as World Health Day. The day is celebrated annually in accordance with the World Health Organization’s aim to discuss health-related issues and to draw attention to specific health issues concerning people across the world. The first World Health Day was celebrated and observed in 1950, after 7 April was set aside as a designated date to celebrate the creation of the World Health Organization in 1948 in the First Health Assembly. The day thereby marks the anniversary of WHO after it was established in 1948.

World Health Day Theme 2022
The theme for this year’s World Health Day is “Our Planet, Our Health". Amid the ongoing pandemic and pollution growing on the planet, diseases like cancer, asthma, and heart diseases are increasing rapidly. World Health Organization aims to focus global attention on the urgent actions needed to “keep humans and the planet healthy."

World Health Day History

World Health Day was one of the first official acts of the World Health Organization, which came into force on 7th April 1948. The first World Health Day was celebrated on 22 July in 1949 and the date was later changed to 7 April, in order to encourage student participation.

In order to understand the history of World Health Day, it is important to look at the creation of the World Health Organization, which took place in 1945 at the United Nations Conference. A motion was passed to create a new and independent organization that is solely dedicated to discussing health topics. As many as 61 countries signed the agreement for the inception of the World Health Organization on April 7 in 1948.

World Health Day Significance

World Health Day is celebrated every year to raise awareness about the ongoing health issues that concern people across the world. The day is also used as an opportunity to spread awareness about the overall health and well-being of people.
